If you have been on the Internet for any more than a minute you probably have a pretty good idea that Google is the monster of all search engines and can drive you tons of targeted traffic for free (and free traffic is definitely the best kind ;-)
With that said, Google is constantly coming out with new tools for us marketers to take advantage of and the one I want to address today is "Google Sitemaps". I want to answer two important questions about Google Sitemaps that I am constantly getting:
Question #1: Will Sitemaps help increase my rankings?
Answer #1: Now, I get this question all the time and the only logical answer I can come up with is YES! Chances are pretty darn good that if Google releases something and you use it, it could only help, not hinder, your rankings! (Remember Blogger.com... yup, the fastest blog sites to get listed in Google! Go figure!)
Question #2: What exactly does a Google Sitemap do?
Answer #2: Well here it is... any time you add new content to your site or your blog, you're going to want Google to include the most up-to-date version in its listings. In the past, this meant waiting for Google to index your site all over again... but since Google runs on its own agenda that could be next week... or next month... or next year. You never knew and it was extremely frustrating.
But finally Google has solved this problem with Google Sitemaps!
By using Sitemaps you can proactively tell Google every time you update your site so Google knows exactly when they need to come back and reindex it. And best of all, it's free!
Think of it as sending Google an invitation to visit your site every time you change it and add new information. This is particularly useful for blogs or other newsy web sites that are updated regularly.
Through Sitemaps you will get:
Up-to-date search results presented to your target market, so they can access the very latest information on your site.
In-depth reports that show you which pages Google has visited and when, so you can make sure they index all your most important content.
Here's a quick five-step guide to walk you through the process of getting your site registered with Google Sitemaps, so you can start using it right away.
Go to Google's "Add URL" page to submit your site, if you haven't already done so. (You can find it at: http://www.google.com/addurl.)
Check to see if Google has indexed your site by typing "cache:http://Your Web Site" into your browser's search bar and hitting "Enter." A saved version of your web page will appear, along with the date and time that Google last visited it. (For example, if I wanted to see when Google last visited our site's homepage, I'd enter the following: "cache:http://www.marketingtips.com")
Go to Google Sitemaps and sign up for an account. Then follow their instructions to add your site or sites to your new account.
Once you've submitted your site to http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps, there's a very quick and easy process you can use to resubmit our site to Google every time you add new content.
Paste the customized URL into your browser's address bar and press "Enter." Then save that URL in your favorites or bookmark folder and simply click on that bookmark every time you update your web site or blog.
And that's it! Once you've got your web site submitted, you can check how often Google drops by to index your pages. You can even see which pages Google is visiting to make sure they're all getting indexed. This will help you drive more traffic to your site from Google.
You can find a much more detailed strategy for using Google Sitemaps in our special bonus lesson,"How to Get Your Latest Blog Post Listed in Google Using Google Sitemaps," which you get for free with Blogging for Dollars DVD a course that teaches marketers how to use blogging to explode their online profits.
If you've ever experienced the frustration of waiting for Google to index your site, you're going to love jumping ahead of your competitors and getting your listings updated right away with Google Sitemaps!

Demographic targeting -- the next big thing in PPC?
I want to take a few minutes to talk about a recent development in paid search -- and its implications as a new Internet marketing tool.
I'm talking about "demographic targeting," something that both MSN AdCenter (in beta) and Google AdWords have just started offering. So let's take a look at what it is and why you might want to add it to your Internet marketing strategies.
What is "demographic targeting?
Simply put, demographic targeting lets you zero in on an audience that shares a specific trait or characteristic, such as men aged 35 to 44 or people who earn over $50,000 per year.
Why use it?
Demographic targeting lets you zero in on the people who are most likely to be looking for what you're selling.
If, for example, you sell health products geared toward menopausal women, then demographic targeting gives you a way to put your ads in front of only women in the menopausal age group.
You'll pay more money for each click on your ad, but your overall return on investment (ROI) should still be much higher when you consider that your traffic is more qualified.
Who can you target?
Who you can target -- and the exact costs -- vary depending on the search engine. Let's take a quick look at the differences between AdCenter and AdWords:
1. MSN Ad Center (still in beta): AdCenter’s targeting features let you display your ads to key audiences who are performing searches using your keywords.
You can target searchers by geographic location, gender, age, and the time of day or week, and you can even apply a combination of targets.
With targeted search, you may be able to achieve a higher position for competitive keywords than your competitors -- that is, if your competition doesn't apply the same targets.
MSN will even provide you with data to help you determine whether your keywords are appropriate for your demographic.
2. Google AdWords: Unlike AdCenter, AdWords does not provide demographic data that will allow you to better target your keywords. Instead, you can target specific AdSense publisher sites -- sites that fit a particular demographic -- to display your ads on.
Besides being able to target audiences by geography, gender, age group, and annual household income, you can also target sites based on ethnicity and whether or not households have children. Like AdCenter, you can select a combination of characteristics to really drill down to the most qualified people possible.
There's no doubt that demographic targeting has real potential as a great new Internet marketing strategy. And I definitely think you'll be seeing a lot more of it in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled.

How one kid made a million dollars online in less than six months!
An unusual story that really stands out for me is the story of a 21-year-old student from England, Alex Tew, who took a simple (and kind of crazy!) idea and turned it into $1 million... in just six months!
Now, you may not know the name Alex Tew. But you may have heard of his web site, http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/. Maybe you've even visited it.
If you have, you've seen the patchwork quilt of tiny advertisements that takes up the entire page.
Alex had the brilliant (and fiendishly simple) idea of selling off the individual pixels on his web page to advertisers for $1 a pixel. Because one pixel is too tiny to display anything meaningful, he sold his pixels in lots of 100. So, for $100, anyone could own a little piece of real estate on MillionDollarHomepage.com for a period of five years.
But it's not so much the idea that's the great thing about this story -- it's why THIS idea out of the many that explode onto the Web every day... month... year grabbed people's imaginations, and took off.
You see, The Million Dollar Homepage could easily have been just another wacky Internet idea that generates some publicity then disappears as quickly as it surfaces.
Of course, there's no doubting that luck had something to do with it... But when you examine the story of The Million Dollar Homepage, it's clear that the wild success of this "wacky" Internet idea was actually founded on solid marketing techniques...
Be unique: On the Web, being first is like winning the jackpot. Alex's idea for his web site was certainly unique! So when his idea began taking off, even though imitators started appearing all over the Web, he's the one who eventually made the serious money.
Being unique is something you should always strive for in your online business. Even if your product isn't the only one of its kind, you should still find your own unique selling point -- what you do that sets you apart from everyone else out there.
Sell the benefits: Alex still had a lot of work to do after creating his site. He had to sell the benefits to advertisers of spending $100 or more for an ad on a blank web page.
And he did this brilliantly -- from his offer of "a piece of Internet history"... to his promise to create publicity... to his calls for advertisers to get in first so their ad stands out more.
Remember, benefits describe exactly how your customers will be better off after buying your product or service.
Create a buzz and get traffic: This is what really turned Alex's idea into gold. People wouldn't just come to his site -- he had to drive them there, as more traffic meant more advertisers.
He knew he had a unique idea so he sent out press releases advertising it, and once a few media outlets started to bite... his web site took off.
His site built up so much momentum that, even though he had no specific target audience, advertisers looking for mass exposure started buying up his pixels faster than he could publish their ads!
Use proven Internet marketing techniques: Alex is either a born marketer or he was getting some great advice! He made sure that his web site built up enough momentum to propel him towards his million-dollar goal by adding testimonials from his happy advertisers and by running a blog that charted his progress.
He also wrote an FAQ that detailed his background (including a picture of him with his university entrance papers) to build his credibility -- another key Internet marketing technique.
And he branched out and used eBay to auction off his final 1,000 pixels -- for $38,100, meaning his final total actually came to $1,037,100!
Now, let me restate for the record: Luck had something to do with Alex's success. His idea "caught on" and spread through the media like wild fire.
But he used SOLID Internet marketing techniques to fuel that fire, and ultimately created his own success.
That's the key. And while we can't necessarily give you your million-dollar idea, we CAN tell you how to make it successful. In the end, the Million Dollar Homepage is a story of how good Internet marketing techniques can make any online venture a success.

How To Get Positioned Higher in Search Engines!
Ok, we all know that search engine promotions are so popular and everyone is talking about it because they can increase traffic to your website without spending advertising dollars!
Search engine positioning/ranking is a very talked about subject. It is confusing and ever changing... that is the problem. What works this month, may not work next month! It is moving at lightning speed.
It is getting harder and harder to get listed high in a search engine's results. It is becoming that you have to make search engine listing a permanent job that takes you 8 hours a day, 5 days a week if you want to be successful at it (as you have to learn about how they work inside and out). The plain fact is that you cannot waste your time on the ONE method of marketing online, you have to diversify and get yourself in other markets before your competitors do! I may have a solution for you, read on.
Virtually everyone begins their web travels at one of the top search engines and your search position determines how many of those people will visit your site.
The great thing about search engines is that (for now) they are free. It should be one of your main priorities to get ranked high on search engines as they are finding ways everyday to improve their profits by charging for higher listings, bold listings, favoring more popular site, etc. The days of "free" advertising or listings on search engines may come to a close over the next year or two.
Such forms of online advertising like banner-ad campaigns or advertising in Ezines all cost money… search engines are FREE (for now, so get on them right away).
What most people don't understand is that search engines are a catalyst to other promotions. For example, when we start a new project or have low traffic we turn to search engines to get traffic immediately. The traffic we get leads to other promotional avenues because other business/industry people find us and we can do joint ventures, partnering, distributors, resellers, etc.
Many websites can bring in thousands of qualified visitors per month by being well positioned in the Top 10 search engines. It all adds up to thousands of dollars of FREE advertising!
How powerful are the top search engines? Let's just go over a couple of figures:
Yahoo! - over 16,000,000 visitors a month
InfoSeek - over 9,000,000 visitors a month
Excite - over 8,000,000 visitors a month
Just a few good positions for even one or two important keywords can drive thousands of visitors to your website -- for FREE.
So do search engines really generate a lot of traffic? Absolutely… if you do it right and use the right tools. The problem is that most people just submit their site and then wonder why they didn't get any traffic. Search engines are responsible for making us over $20,000 in sales every month between 2 of my companies… so you can see how it pays itself off very quickly.
Now, don't get me wrong, search engines will not make you rich (and anyone who tells you they will is lying to you). They are one method of promoting your site that can be very profitable if done right (just like other methods of promoting your business online). For those of you who have my Internet marketing course, you know how I talk about the importance of diversifying your marketing efforts. So do not place all of your time with search engines while ignoring your other promotions. Search engines are quite profitable if you do it right and spend your time effectively with them (we will talk more about this in a moment).
I can take about 30 pages and explain all the tips and tricks that people are using today to get ranked higher in search engines, but now that we have found a way around that, I will not bother. Besides, by next month a few of them will have changed and all the "techno-babble" would confuse a lot of people and some of the information would not make any sense to them.
So is achieving a good position impossible? No, not for those who use the right tools like SubmitWolf Pro and WebPosition (we will talk about these pieces of software a little later in this section). In my opinion, they are the perfect "team" of software to assure that you are not only ranked high in the top search engines, but that you are ABOVE YOUR COMPETITORS!
Before we get into that, I must explain something. There are two parts to search engine placement. Part one is to submit your sites… but submit them properly using all the techniques available to get you rated high for the keywords you select… submitting your URL to search engines is only half the job! If you don't check your search positions and work to improve them, no one will find you - in other words you won't get any traffic.
So part two of your "search engine battle" is to monitor your positioning to see where you place, if your competitors place above you, and if your positioning starts to fall - to catch it and fix the problems right away.
Everything depends on your search position. If your competition places before you, they win, you lose!
SubmitWolf Pro software submits your site to the search engines and the WebPosition software monitors it so you can improve your ranking. We will talk more about both of them in the next few paragraphs.
Whether you have a new website or a site that has been submitted to the search engines already, these two pieces of software that we will talk about later in this section are critical in getting your site listed at the top of search engines.
Step One: Submitting your site "properly"
SubmitWolf Pro is search engine submission software that actually works to get your site placed higher in the search engines. As many of you know from my Internet marketing course, we would not recommend a piece of search engine submission software out there because most of these pieces of software send out one set of keywords, site titles, and description to all the search engines. You will find that your keywords and descriptions get cut off in some search engines, or that certain criteria and rules may not be met so you are not submitted at all with certain engines, you cannot choose the best category or categories available for your listing (choosing the right category can be crucial to your customers finding your site), and this is just for starters. And the most important reason why you don't want to use these services is because your site will not be positioned high in the search engines as different search engines have different ranking criteria and you have just submitted the same "stuff" to all the search engines (not optimizing your listing with each search engine separately).
Deciphering all the rules of each of the engines can be a chore. This revolutionary new software called SubmitWolf Pro guides you through picking the right keywords and descriptions in its "tutorial", takes the information that you input, and prepares the submission just the way each engine wants it - submitting your website to the top 150 search engines, indices, and directories. Your description will never get cut off in mid-sentence and you will end up in the right category because SubmitWolf Pro knows what each engine wants!
The SubmitWolf Pro knows the rules and guidelines for each search engines (the programmers of the software spend all of their time monitoring them) ensuring that when you submit your website, you'll get excellent positioning and boost your site towards the top of the list!
More importantly, with SubmitWolf Pro you are prompted on how to write effective keywords and descriptions, instead of merely providing an automated placement service with keywords and descriptions that may not best utilize the sorting logic of the targeted engines. This crucial information provided by SubmitWolf Pro helps boost your site toward the top of the list. This translates to increased visits.
Ok, let me summarize what SubmitWolf Pro does… it is easy to rank in the top 10 by helping you prepare your site data exactly the way the engines want it! Including site titles and description.
Until now, the only way to get high-end promotion for your website has been to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars with site promotion professionals OR learn all the tricks of the trade and spend the hours doing it yourself (which can take weeks!). SubmitWolf Pro was created by the same company we personally use and pay $600-$800 per website to submit our sites and clients' sites to the search engines (yes, that is how good they are!). They use this proprietary software to facilitate the promotion of their clients' sites… now you can get professional strength promotion for a fraction of the price.
All you do is point and click and fill in the blanks!
I have to say, I am very, very impressed. So impressed, that it is the only piece of search engine submission software out there that I will recommend.
Click here to read more about WebPosition software and how you can get a copy for yourself. I highly
recommend it!
To get good search positioning in the search engines, The SubmitWolf Pro and WebPosition software used together are, in my opinion, the most powerful "team" on the market. Don't get confused by all the other software out there which claims to be the best in getting you ranked high… we have tried just about all of them and there is no comparison to this combination.
Step Two: Monitoring and improving your ranking
Ok, your question may be "what does The SubmitWolf Pro not do?" Well, it will not monitor your search engine positioning and let you know where you are compared to your competitors.
A piece of software called WebPosition provides reports to show you where you stand under specific keywords, keyword combinations, and search phrases, so you can make improvements, correct problems, and increase your website's traffic without spending a penny in advertising.
Many of you have possibly heard of WebPosition… and we will discuss which version you want (as they offer many version)… and surprisingly enough, it is the cheapest version you want and I will explain why it is the best.
There are many benefits to WebPosition and what it can do for you.
The first is that it can take some search engines as long as six weeks to include your submission in their database, whereas others may only take a day or two. So, it is important that you check them regularly to make sure your submission is included in all the top ten search engines. WebPosition has a built in scheduler that will turn itself on every day (or week, or whenever you tell it to) and do it all for you automatically.
The second main benefit is that it saves you hours a week by consistently and comprehensively monitoring your websites search position, making sure you are ranked high, checking where your competitors are in relation to you, and alerting you to problems. WebPosition will literally do this in seconds for you (and you can schedule it to do this for you automatically once a day, once a week, or whatever… with its built in scheduler).
If you offer more than one product or service on your website, it's important to get each "page" which features a different product into a prominent search position under a different keyword. That way you get more exposure in search engines.
Let me explain this a little more for those who don't understand the impact of this and how it can dramatically affect your search engines positioning. Instead of having one main catalogue page with all your products which would have to get ranked high on a long list of keywords and key phrases - which is next to impossible to do; you could have 10 pages, each page with one product that optimizes a specific set of keywords or key phrases. Therefore multiplying your exposure by 10 in the search engines! This technique gives you the chance to corner your entire market no matter what set of keywords they search under!).
Note: Many people overlook this important concept and lose valuable traffic to their competition.
For each product or service you offer, there could be a dozen or more keywords or combination of keywords that someone might search to find you. A good ranking with each word/phrase can significantly improve your site's traffic. So lets go over some numbers here so you can understand why I have brought this subject up.
10 major engines X 6 products/services X 12 keywords/phrases = 720 positions to monitor EVERY day or week.
No one has time to conduct 720 searches a week AND record results AND take corrective action. If your website happens to offer dozens of products or services, you already know that tracking your search positions is an impossible task. That is, unless you use WebPosition to do the work for you!
If one of your webpages have been gradually moving down in the rankings, you can quickly identify the problem and correct it. Without WebPosition's powerful reports, you have no way of even knowing a problem exists - until your site traffic slows down, and it's too late.
WebPosition is also the first software product that allows you to keep tabs on your competition and how their websites rank in relation to yours. With WebPosition, you know what your competition is up to - literally!
Imagine how long it would take to visit 10 different search engines, search on 5 or 10 keywords, and then scroll down the resulting list of websites hoping to spot yours! WebPosition automates this task and saves hours of work!
After WebPosition reports all the results to you, it then provides specific instructions on how to increase your position in each of the 10 top search engines.
Click here, to get more details on how WebPosition works and how to pick up a copy for yourself.
You can now see the value of why WebPosition are a great "team" and how they can dramatically affect your ranking in search engines. I recommend them highly if you are serious about getting better search engine positioning.
Conclusion:
The conclusion is that if you want to get listed high in search engines and don't want to pay the $800+ to a company to do it for you (and then have to pay them 6 month later when you need to do it again), you need WebPosition software.
By using them as a "team", there is literally nothing like them out there on the market. I cannot recommend them higher. They will not only save you a lot of money, a lot of time, but you will probably recoup their cost in profits you will generate over the next 30 days by using them. Remember what I said earlier in this section: "search engines are responsible for making us over $20,000 in sales every month for 2 of my companies"… so you can see how they pay for themselves very quickly.
The WebPosition software costs $147 Click here to learn more about it.
And remember because the search engines are continuously changing, you can obtain upgrades for one year included at this price - free of charge.
Why do I need WebPosition and SubmitWolf Pro? Because you can't do by hand the crucial marketing tasks that WebPosition and SubmitWolf Pro do unattended - it would take you too long to be cost effective. These two software programs make it easy.
You know me and how I believe in automating everything and making the software and software robots do all the work - these two pieces of software are examples of that. That is why we use some of the software that I recommend in my Internet marketing course… everything should be hands-free. Don't spend your time taking care of daily tasks and chores, let the software do it for you so you can spend your time marketing and promoting your product!
A Gentleman who Does Over $500,000 in Sales Just Because of his Search Engine Positioning!
So do search engines really work? Let me illustrate how powerful they can be, there is a gentleman locally (he will remain anonymous as he doesn't want people stealing his idea) who promotes his cellular phone business online solely through search engines and newsgroups… nothing ELSE. Just from this, he is doing over $500,000 in sales online every year just from search engines! Yes, that is how powerful they are if you use them right with the proper tools.

How to Spy on Your Competitors - Legally!
Competitive Intelligence is the art of staying one step ahead of the competition by gathering information about their operations. You have to know what they are up to, so I am going to show you how to check out your competitors' products and marketing schemes without them even knowing you are there. In other words, this lesson is about how to spy on the competition without getting caught.
Assuming that you have less than five direct competitors, you should always buy their product to determine their sales process (and service) and get on their mailing list to see future promotions. The relatively small price you pay for their product will pay for itself many times over in the knowledge you gain by finding out what they are doing and how they are doing it.
Some of your competitors may process orders manually and could recognize your name as their competition. Use your spouse's name, a fictitious name, an employee's name, or an alternative company name (if you have another company) that will allow the mail to get to you without revealing who you are. Also, make sure you use an alternative email address and phone number.
I do this with all of my competitors and find out exactly what they are doing, who they are dealing with, and how they are doing it... all by their email and snail mail correspondence.
Also, by purchasing their products you will be able to experience exactly what a regular customer would go through and you can then judge their product, service and operations against yours. This gives a great advantage to all of your customers because you will know the pros and cons of your competition and can more effectively sell your product or service.
Important Tip: You may even want to have one of your employees or friends call your competitor. They could pose as a satisfied customer wanting to see what products or services the company is working on for the future.
Where Do You Start?
An absolute must is to go to http://www.netwatch.ca, it will search for specific keywords (i.e. your personal name, company name, product name... or your competitor's personal name, company name, product name) in over 280,000 newsgroups.
As a side note, we used to recommend Reference.com, http://www.reference.com which was a great service with a ton of features, and most of all, it was totally free. Their site is now down for an unknown reason, but this should only be temporary. If you want to go with these guys, check their URL whenever you have the chance and see if they have any updates listed.
Another free service which you may have heard of, DejaNews http://www.dejanews.com, offers a very limited version of what Netwatch.ca does and what http://www.reference.com used to do. Through DejaNews, you can perform a search for keywords in specified newsgroups to find out if your name, or any other information about your company, is being used without your prior knowledge or permission. This service is a great start, but Netwatch.ca will provide you with the full details automatically (as listed below) without requiring you do to any work whatsoever.
Netwatch.ca will email you within hours of one of those keywords appearing in any of the 280,000 newsgroups on the Internet. This is critical, since you will know exactly what people are saying about you and your other competition within moments of them mentioning it. It gives you the opportunity to defend yourself or solve customer service problems before any damage is done. This is a very powerful tool, so don't take it lightly.
Let me go over three powerful uses for this service:
Imagine anytime a competitor tries to "badmouth" you in any newsgroup or public forum... or even compare your products/services unfairly, within hours you are there to reply to the post and deliver the truth (or your account of the situation).
Now, put yourself in the competitor's shoes. Imagine if anytime you wrote something, your competition was right there - as if they were watching over your shoulder all the time. Wouldn't you be very careful in the future as to what you say... and wouldn't you be dumbfounded as to how your competition was always one step ahead of you?
Remember the old customer service rule... bad news travels ten times faster than good news. One dissatisfied customer will tell ten other people, while one satisfied customer may tell one or none. All it takes is a few postings of dissatisfied customers to lose a lot of business. Can you imagine how powerful it is if you are right there to publicly take care of any customer service problems when a dissatisfied customer posts anything negative about your product or company? This will impress the thousands of people who read newsgroups but don't post on them.
I go out "looking for trouble" and find dissatisfied customers instead of them having to hunt for me. It is so easy that I am astonished no one else is doing it.
Netwatch.ca can also be a great source for sales promotions and an enormous time saver. We talked about promoting your business on the newsgroups by not only posting to them, but monitoring them looking for posts where you can offer your advice and get your SIG file posted as well. You can get Netwatch.ca to do most of this work for you!
For example, if you sell something that has to do with international investing, you could have it search for keywords such as "international", "overseas", "Japan", "Britain", and other countries. You want to search for keywords specific to what you have to offer. If you search for keywords such as "investing" or "financing", you will get thousands of results a day. You want to be very specific to narrow your results to only posts that are potential business for you. Netwatch.ca will email you every time a post is done on that subject. It could be someone asking for advice or giving their opinion… so you have an opportunity to reply and offer your assistance (and get your name, SIG file out there). Or the post you are notified of could be your competition trying to promote something (you can monitor what they are doing). This will save you from scanning the newsgroups daily, and is a BIG time saver!
Let me repeat what happens here (it is that important!). Netwatch.ca can save you the time of scanning through newsgroups daily and alerts you anytime there is something worth replying to in over 280,000 newsgroups online.
Are you starting to understand how powerful this resource is?
You can even go the extent of having Netwatch.ca search for all of your competitors' email addresses on newsgroups. That way anytime your competitors are promoting their products/services or saying ANYTHING online, you will know about it.
You can also pay for "competition" monitoring services. Companies such as:
eWatch - http://www.ewatch.com
MarkWatch - http://www.markwatch.com
They will monitor domain names, URLs, newsgroups, and websites for activity by your competitors. Both services offer free trials so you can compare them before you commit. But note that you will spend a minimum of $100 per month for this (it can be much higher depending on what specialized services you are interested in). There is a big price difference between these two companies to watch for as well, MarkWatch being the less expensive of the two.
As a side note, there are about 50 websites and resources that will help you investigate and monitor your competition online (including a lot of other neat resources for locating "sensitive" information) that comes with my course. These resources will allow you to find information about your competitors that you would not normally have known about.
Assuming that you have less than five direct competitors, you should always buy their product to determine their sales process (and service) and get on their mailing list to see future promotions. Three Proven Strategies Sure to Strenthen Your Business and Bulk Up Your Profits!
And it can't be just a static plan. It should be one that you review
regularly along with a close examination of your web site's traffic
stats and sales figures. This approach will allow you to spot new
profitable opportunities, identify and help solve problems... and
incorporate new goals and strategies into your business -- like the
three we're going to cover in just a minute.
A thorough review of your business is really THE best way to ensure
that you accomplish your main business objective for the year --
whether that is generating a certain amount of profits or launching
a new product.
At this point I should say that if you don’t have a business plan,
please go make one now! Seriously, right now!
Here's an example of the importance of a plan... Many people buy
themselves a gym membership at this time of year with the objective
to "get fit." Well, I'm no fitness guru, but to have any chance at
all of accomplishing this goal, it's vital to create a fitness plan
containing other smaller goals -- like lose 5 pounds by March, 10
pounds by June, and so on.
Not only does ticking off these smaller goals within your overall
plan keep you motivated, but keeping track of progress in this way
lets you see how close -- or far -- you are from achieving your main
objective. Not having a plan means many people who join gyms use
their membership twice in January and then never again... with the
only thing getting leaner being their bank balance!
That's why it's so important to make a business plan and set
achievable goals -- it's your road map to success and a beefier bank balance!
You should always be planning different ways to improve your success
and get more profits in your pocket... So with that said, let's jump
right into the three killer strategies that are hands-down the best
plan for making 2005 your most profitable year yet.
Key strategy #1:
Improve your sales process and convert more traffic into sales
Do you get regular traffic to your site? Once your visitors get to
your site, how long do they stay? How many of them buy?
The best way to improve your sales process is to start by looking at
your web site stats. These are a goldmine containing priceless
nuggets of information, like how much traffic your site is getting,
how people travel through your site, which pages are the most
popular, and where your visitors are coming from.
By analyzing these stats, and looking at them alongside your sales
figures and online promotions, you can work out things like what
proportion of your traffic is being converted into sales, and which
promotions or online campaigns are working better than others.
You'll then find yourself with a much clearer picture of your
business overall, and a good idea of what you need to change,
improve, or build on.
If your web stats show good traffic levels but low sales figures,
then you need to tighten up your sales process. Review both your
salesletter and your order form -- even just a few tweaks can make
a HUGE difference.
Your salesletter: If people are leaving your web site from the sales
page without clicking through to the order-form, then the salesletter
is simply not doing its job in convincing visitors to buy your
product or service.
In this case, it's time for a salesletter tune-up. First stop --
your headline. Make sure that it's compelling, will resonate with
your target market, and contains the main benefit of your product
or service.
Then, ensure that your body copy builds your credibility, focuses
on the BENEFITS (not the features) of your product or service, and
includes testimonials and a strong guarantee.
Another quick fix is to make sure that your P.S. reinforces the
main sales messages. (Remember, many people ONLY read the headline
and P.S.)
And, of course, the call to action is very important in the sales
process. It should state EXACTLY what you want the person to do
next, how they can do it, and that you want them to do it NOW! It's
the bridge between the salesletter and the order form.
Your order form: If your web site stats show that people are
abandoning your site at the order form stage without placing an
order, then there may be something wrong with it. Is it too
complicated? Does it have a different "look" from the rest of your
web site? Are there links on the order page to other web sites or
other pages on your site?
First, you must make sure that your order process and the form
itself are easy to understand. To help people follow the process,
provide a step-by-step guide that leads buyers through the ordering
process, spelling out things like how to fill the form out, how the
product will be shipped, when their credit card will be charged,
and so on.
This could be on the order form itself -- allowing a buyer to read
it as they complete the relevant steps. The form itself should have
a simple layout with all the information fields arranged in a
logical, easy-to-follow sequence. Use the "KISS" principle -- "Keep
It Simple, Stupid!"
As far as possible, the order form page should have the same "look"
as the rest of your web site. Keep it clear and uncluttered -- there
should never be other distractions on the page like images,
irrelevant copy, advertising, or links to other sites that take the
buyer away from your site. You want them to focus on filling out
the relevant information.
It's a good idea to reassure people that they are making a safe,
secure purchase when they access your order form, by saying
something like, "Welcome to our secure online order form."
Key strategy #2:
Offer a "backend" product that's an easy sell to your existing
customers
Statistics show that 30% of your existing customers are guaranteed
to buy from you again. It makes sense... you've already done a lot
of the hard work establishing your credibility and proving that
you run a reputable business that gives your customers what they
want.
So, offering another "backend" product to your existing customers
can be a great way to boost your profits without eating into your
marketing budget.
A backend product can be any one of a number of things. For example,
if your site sells cameras, new products could include:
An add-on to your existing product, such as a new lens for a camera
A relevant information product, like an eBook containing photography
tips
A complementary product, like a bag for the camera
... And so on. Sit down and come up with a list of products related
to yours that you think your market might be interested in.
Remember that the key to finding any new product is to identify a
problem that your customers have and then come up with a product
or service that solves it for them. Always read and keep any
feedback or comments you receive from your customers -- positive
and negative. You can also solicit feedback through a customer
survey or questionnaire.
In addition, you should also be constantly assessing the needs of
your target market by reading the publications that they read, and
visiting the web sites, online forums, and blogs that they visit.
And don't forget to check out your competitors' sites!
When you've found a suitable product, launching it to existing
customers is easy. You already have their contact information, so
you can simply e-mail them a promotion highlighting the problem
they have, and explaining how your new product or service will solve
it.
You can even use your customer feedback as a selling point, saying
something like, "I've listened to feedback and comments from my
customers, and can now offer you a product I just KNOW you're going
to love..."
Key strategy #3:
Set up an affiliate program to drive tons more traffic to your site
and boost your sales
How would you like to have a network of other people to do your
selling for you? Well, in a nutshell, that's what an affiliate
program is. An affiliate is someone who promotes your product on
their web site in return for a commission on every sale that they
send your way.
There are a number of reasons why you should consider this top-notch
strategy for your business:
It can drive TONS more traffic to your site
There are ZERO advertising costs -- affiliates do all of their own
marketing
There is no risk to you, since you only pay your affiliates after
they've made the sale
You gain exposure to new target markets through the e-mail lists
and web sites of your affiliates
The fact is that affiliate programs are one of the most powerful
ways to market online, and almost every product or service will be
MUCH more successful if you offer an affiliate program for it. I
know, because at The Internet Marketing Center, we've made millions
since we first started our affiliate program -- in fact, we
generated $2 million last year alone!
You can find affiliates by putting a page on your web site inviting
people to apply, and by approaching sites that you think have a
similar target audience.
Starting and managing an affiliate program can be done one of two
ways -- you can go through a provider or do it yourself. Using a
provider like Commission Junction or Linkshare can be very
expensive, so it's well worth looking into managing the program
yourself.
If you do it yourself, affiliate software like AssocTRAC is
available to manage the whole process, from tracking affiliate sales right
through to paying commissions. An affiliate program is a highly
effective strategy for generating swarms of new traffic and
multiplying your sales -- with minimal effort and cost on your part.
Final thoughts
It doesn't matter whether you're making $100,000 or $10,000 a year
from your Internet business, or whether you sell kettles or sports
cars -- all three of these strategies will work for your business.
I know, because I've used them all and continue to use them, and I
can tell you in no uncertain terms that they work.
But they will always be even more effective if you spend some time
every so often reviewing your business plan, setting new business
goals, and taking a close look at your web stats and other areas of
your business where you could make improvements.
Carrying out a regular business review in this way is just like
giving your car a regular check-up -- you just need to stick your
head under the hood of your business now and then to make sure
everything's running smoothly.
And whether it's adding some new parts or just making a few tweaks
here and there, you can always find ways to make it run even better!
regularly along with a close examination of your web site's traffic
stats and sales figures.
You already have their contact information, so
you can simply e-mail them a promotion highlighting the problem
they have, and explaining how your new product or service will solve
it.
You can even use your customer feedback as a selling point, saying
something like, "I've listened to feedback and comments from my
customers, and can now offer you a product I just KNOW you're going
to love..."

Exclusive Case Studies: Three "Regular People" Share Their Secrets to Earning More Than $100,000 a Year From Their Online Businesses!
Every so often, I like to use an issue of this newsletter
to share the online success stories of some of my students and
fellow Internet entrepreneurs.
It's a great opportunity for all of us (myself included) to see
how some of you are using the kinds of strategies I teach for
growing your business and boosting your profits!
All too often, I see entrepreneurs trying to market their
businesses a dozen different ways all at once... and not really
succeeding at any of them! If you have many different marketing
strategies in place, and you find that none of them are really
getting you’re the results you need, try focusing on just one
and giving it all you've got. I think the results might surprise
you!
As you read the case studies below, remember that these are "real
people" just like you and me. Each one of these entrepreneurs
focuses on the key marketing strategy they think will benefit
their business, does it well, maximizes profits, and then moves
on to developing their business further.
PLEASE NOTE: The three profiles I've included for you here have
been heavily edited and condensed. The success stories that are
posted at Secretstotheirsuccess.com Private Site are typically
15 to 20 pages each, so there is no way I could reprint them
in full in this newsletter.
Case Study #1: GreetingsFromSanta.com
Mark Bulleit not only hit upon the winning idea of selling a seasonal
information product based on the name of the town he lived in, but
he also chose just the right strategy to make it a roaring success!
Mark's town is Santa Claus, Indiana, and his site
GreetingsFromSanta.com offers people the chance to send children personal greetings from Santa Claus himself… complete with the Santa Claus postmark!
And, with all of the Christmas-related web sites out there, an
affiliate program was the obvious strategy to focus on. The result
is that Mark pulled in over $100,000 in revenues last year in only
seven weeks -- and how he's planning to double that figure this year!
Critical to that success is his affiliate program that accounts for
over 40% of traffic to his site, and up to 30% of his total revenues.
"For me, starting up an affiliate program was a no-brainer," says Mark.
"There are just so many non-competing Christmas-related web sites out
there that can benefit from offering my product.
"In my experience, a strong affiliate program can be the key to your
success."
Mark's approach is to actively look for potential affiliate sites,
and then take the time to study the site and contact the owner
personally to ask them to join his program.
He has the following tips for those of you thinking of starting up
your own affiliate program:
Use affiliate management software that has good tracking and
reporting features -- this helps encourage potential affiliates to
sign up
Offer generous commissions to "super affiliates" -- as they are the
highly motivated sellers who will generate the most sales
Look after your affiliates and do everything you can to make their
job easier -- this way you both benefit and you build good,
profitable long-term partnerships with your affiliates
This is all great advice, and well worth following. As Mark himself
says, "You'll save yourself a lot of wasted time and money if you
follow the example of other entrepreneurs whose online businesses are
successful."
Now that Mark has a successful affiliate program up and running, he
can focus on developing NEW ideas to build his business. "Every year,
I come up with a new volume of ideas to help me solidly establish
myself on the Web as the dominant site in my industry," he says.
And he's helped in doing this by the fact that he first identified
and focused on one KEY strategy to help establish his business -- an
affiliate program that, according to Mark, "opens so many doors that
would be difficult -- if not impossible -- to open otherwise."
Case Study #2: VGSportsInc.com
How would you like to play video games for a living? Well, Bert
Ingley turned his love of sports video games into an $187,000 a year
online business, producing and selling sports video game strategy
eBooks!
And, key to his success was his early decision to focus on using
effective search engine optimization strategies to drive visitors --
and lots of them -- to his web sites.
"Search engines have been the core building block of our marketing
plan," says Bert. "In the early days of our business, we spent huge
amounts of time working on our search engine placement."
And it worked… Bert was able to establish a real presence on the
Internet -- consistently listed in the top five in Google for his
main keywords. He recommends the following as crucial to search
engine success:
Make sure that you have relevant keywords in your web site copy
Buy domain names that contain relevant keywords and use them as your
main URL or direct them to your main web site (Bert does this with www.maddentips.com).
Many search engines re-rank sites on a weekly basis, so spend some
time seeing where you stand and make necessary adjustments
Keep up to date with the latest search engine news through
www.searchenginenews.com for example, and update your sites accordingly
Link to other popular sites in the same subject area and get them to
link to you, as linking to other relevant sites helps boost your
search engine results ranking
Use Wordtracker to find the right keywords for your web site
All this early hard work really paid off for Bert, and saved him time
later on: "Now that all our sites have high rankings," he says, "we
spend just a moderate amount of time maintaining them."
And the time he now saves on dealing with these day-to-day tasks
leaves Bert free to concentrate on building his business (seven web
sites and counting!) and, of course, to play video games!
Case Study #3: Decorate-Redecorate.com
After becoming increasingly fed up with her consulting job, Barbara
Jennings finally decided to take the plunge and start an Internet
business doing what she REALLY loves -- giving home decorating tips!
Now, the 59-year-old grandmother's web site Decorate-Redecorate.com brings in $102,000 a year, and she only has to spend 30 to 60 minutes a day on the day-to-day management chores!
Barbara spends such little time actually managing her business because
she has focused on automating her business, allowing her to spend more
time on developing new products and providing good customer service.
The areas of your business Barbara suggests automating include:
E-mail communications using autoresponders
Stock control and ordering processes
An affiliate program
One example of this automation is e-mail -- vital for delivering
her eBooks to customers. "I use Mailloop 24/7. It handles the purchases
and usercodes and autoresponders for all my products," says Barbara.
"I just returned from a 10-day trip to Japan, and was able to
track and administrate my business overseas with my laptop and
a little help from a family member in the USA."
That kind of automation is worth its weight in gold. Not just in
allowing Internet business owners like Barbara to take vacations
AND check up on their business at the same time, but in creating
invaluable business development time.
"I only spend about 30 to 60 minutes a day managing my business,"
she says. "The rest of my time is spent marketing it, developing
more exclusive products, and expanding the web sites."
And, in Barbara's case this automation has freed up enough time
for her to create SEVEN eBooks in just over a year!
Final thoughts
These three entrepreneurs all had a great idea for an Internet
business, and they got their web sites going by focusing on
selected strategies, including:
Starting an affiliate program
Effective search engine optimization
Automation
Of course, there are hundreds more techniques you can use to build
a successful online business. But if you try to implement them
all at once, you're going to be scattered and unfocussed -- and
none of your strategies will work as well as they could.
It's better to focus on just one or two strategies early on, and
learn them as well as you possibly can. Then you'll be in a
position to move onto other strategies as your business grows and
develops.
Now for the fun part! If any of you think you've got a success
story that my "Secrets To Their Success" subscribers would like
to read about, please do not hesitate to visit www.secretstotheirsuccess.com/suggest and tell me all about it. I'm really looking forward to hearing from you!
We may even feature some of the stories in a later issue of this
